Our story
What is now La Calandria Lodge was once a working farm for cattle, horses, and coffee. In 1998, Terri Mallory protected these 26 hectares with a new vision in mind: conservation, education, and regeneration. By 1999, reforestation efforts were already underway, slowly transforming the land into the vibrant secondary forest that exists today.
Built originally as a station for students, La Calandria became a place where people could learn directly from nature. Over the years, it has welcomed educational programs, conservation organizations, birders, researchers, and curious travelers from around the world. Longstanding partnerships with organizations such as Change the World, National Geographic, and the Monteverde Institute have helped shape its legacy as a space for environmental education and meaningful connection.

Today, under the care of the Costa Rican Conservation Foundation, La Calandria Lodge continues to honor its roots through reforestation efforts, its on-site tree nursery, and immersive experiences that invite guests to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the natural world.
